As you may not remember I broke my angle grinder last year. Angle grinders are very important for my brand of clumsy and rusty wrenching so I repaired it using only the finest materials.
That’s right. J-B weld. This used to be a plastic bu ton that stopped the gears inside from rotating.
My wire wheel got stuck onto the grinder and when I tried to unbolt it the entire assembly snapped.
I took the angle grinder apart and removed all remnants of the button and a good deal of grease.
You can use a wrench to keep the shaft from spinning. I had a few the right size but they were all to thick. No problem! I’ll just cut this one to the right thickness.
Just a few applications of PB blaster, a torch, a sledgehammer and a handful of high temp wheel bearing grease and I am back to the grind.

I can understand wanting to fix it instead of buying a new one as I’m a cheap bastard myself, but a new angle grinder’s like $20.

Cheap bastard? Get on my level!

...and this time he could have bought a Makita!

But seriously though. This took less time than going to the store and buying an angle grinder would take and was done with things I had laying around.

Ahh, modified tools, I will look the other way.

I had a similar issue with a dremmel. Button that stopped shaft from rotating either stripped away or was no longer operating properly and shaft only had one flat surface. I ground opposite side to fit a wrench around it. Works like a charm.

It still functions like it used to. Just added lightness.

Gotta love using your tools to fix your tools.

I’m convinced that all 4.5" angle grinders are just rebrands of the same exact model.

Its not even just that though, its grinding down the wrench. Where I work modified tools are against the rules and it has been beaten into my head to confiscate any that I see.

actually, no. If I have to use my tools to fix my tools, I give myself a proper kicking in the butt for buying crappy tool in the first place.
Tho dremmel was more of an experiment, not a permanent tool. Wanted to see how well it works. Hate the damn thing. Button fell off within a week of purchase. When its running, it gets soooo hot. and blades wear out too quick to finish cutting butter.

You’ll have to pry them from my cold dead hands ...
You damn dirty ape.

I dunno, I’ve seen some shit. The Makitas are the best garbage grade, IMO.

Wow ... username checks out.

That’s pretty much what I get from the mechanics as well.

I have a totally and unreasonable hatred of Makitas. I know this is unfounded hate of Makitas but I think it stems from the fact that when my dad bought a makita drill in like 1994 and I was like five at the time I just didn’t like the color of it.

My dad was in construction for a long time and mostly ended up with Makita power tools - a hammer drill, a cordless drill, a cord drill, etc. etc. So, while I also probably saw Makita tools at age five, they were among the first tools I got to use, which took off some of the ghastliness of the green.

thanks for running background check!

It’s just one of the services I offer when I’m not buying magical tools that never break.

This guy’s reviews are amazing (IMO - I’m not an engineer). But he points out a bunch of points regular guys like me would never have known. I would have assumed all angle grinders are the same too. Occasional Canadian words you have to have an interpreter for.

You must be really busy with background checks then. When do you have time to repair all your tools?
![]() 05/02/2016 at 14:29 |

Oh well I only do it 7:30 - 4:00 Eastern, then it is tool repairing time.
